Welcome to Vis!

The island of Vis is the most protruding Croatian island with an area of 90.30 km2. The channel of Hvar separates Vis from the island of Hvar, and the Bisevo channel from the island of Bisevo. The island of Vis is approximately 60 miles away from the Italian coast.

Three mountains (Hum (585 m), Sveti Duh (563 m), Mali Hum (514m)) are stretching across the island and between the mountains there are karstic fields.

The town of Vis was founded in the 4th Century B.C. by Greek colonists from the island of Syracuse as the first Greek town on the eastern Adriatic coast. For the next four centuries, Polis Issa was indisputably the most powerful Adriatic city-state. Regarding the strategic significance of the island throughout its sometimes turbulent history, Vis experienced a fair share of fluctuations in government starting from the indigenous Illyrians to the Greeks, Romans, Italians, French, English, and until the last century, the Austrians. In spite of this unfavorable history, the people of Vis have managed to preserve their Croatian identity. In the town of Vis itself, remnants of the ancient Issa and a number of exhibits from the period are in safekeeping at the archaeological museum.

The major centers on the island are the town of Vis and Komiza. Other settlements have developed in the interior of the island on the edge of the fields mainly along the old road Vis - Komiza (Podselje, Marine Zemlje, Podspilje, Podstrazje, Zena Glava and Podhumlje.)

The town of Vis is situated on the northeastern part of the island. It developed from the former settlements Kut and Luka that merged into one entity after the construction of the church of Madonna of Spilica in 16th century.

Vis is administrative center of 11 villages and they are: Brgujac, Dračevo polje, Marinje Zemlje, Milna, Plisko polje, Podselje, Podstražje, Rogačić, Rukavac, Stončica and Vis.

Town of Vis has extremely rich cultural heritage. The whole city is a monument so in many places you can see the preserved remains of ancient buildings like the town of Issa, Roman baths, a necropolis Issa, summer mansion, numerous churches and Tito's cave.

Until the mid-twentieth century, the main source of income for inhabitants of Vis was wine production. Today the population is mainly in the tourism and hospitality business. Besides being known for its good wine Vis is also known for its rich cuisine and specialties such as “viski cviti, hib and viska pogaca“.

In Vis there is the part of town called Kut that is well known for several authentic restaurants where the fish specialties are prepared according to traditional recipes. It is a true paradise for gourmets and lovers of fine food and wines.

Town of Vis offers supreme accommodation in many hotels, apartments and villas. For those who are looking for cultural events Vis offers many cultural events: plays, exhibitions, concerts, music and folklore events, and particularly interesting manifestation “Night of Vis” - rich with cultural and entertainment program and held last Saturday of the month July.

Vis is rich with bays and beautiful clean beaches. It offers a great enjoyment in great surroundings.

For those who are seeking an active holiday there are numerous recreational and sport facilities offering sailing, diving, fishing, water skiing, paragliding and many other interesting activities.

There is also a possibility for underwater diving and exploration of the sea bottom that is particularly appealing due to many sunken boat wrecks.

The town of Vis is the only place on the island that has a daily ferry-boat line with Split (30 nautical miles distant coastal town). During the summer season it is also connected with the towns on the Italian coast ( particularly Ancona). The town of Vis is a good choice for those coming without their cars, because all the necessary facilities are at hand in the town.

The most significant and valuable aspect of Vis is the quality and preserved natural beauty of the island. Perhaps our strongest tourist “trump card” is that the World Organization for Environmental Protection has placed Vis among one of the ten most environmentally preserved islands in the Mediterranean.

Come and relax on secluded beaches of numerous peaceful bays, in transparent blue sea and under the hot sun of Vis. Spend your time in historic ambience of mediaeval city of Vis that echoes the voices of a cappella singers and will make your stay an unforgettable experience.
