Brac is Croatian island in the Adriatic situated in front of the city of Split. Brac is the largest island in Dalmatia and the third largest island in the Adriatic Sea. This unique island has numerous smaller and larger picturesque villages of which following are inhabited: Bobovisca, Bobovisca na Moru, Bol, Dol (Marina), Dracevica, Lower Humac, Upper Humac, Lozisca, Milna, Mirca Murvica, Nerezisca, Novo Selo, Podhume, Marina, Povlja, Praznica, Pucisca, Split, Sumartin, Supetar, Sutivan, Selce and Skrip.
Milna is the biggest settlement on the west coast of the island of Brac. It is situated at the end of a large cove that overlooks the Gate of Split, 20 km southwest from Supetar. In the Gate of Split area, in front of the bay of Milna, there is a small island Mrduja. One of the interesting summer events in Milna is a traditional manifestation based on a contention between the people from Brac and residents of the neighboring island of Solta. The name of the event is "Pulling Mrduja" and it gathers every year hundreds of inhabitants from Solta and Brac that take part in symbolic rope pulling trying to win the only island that lies between the island of Brac and Solta - the island of Mrduja.
Municipality of Milna was founded in 17th century and it developed around the family castle Cerinic. This noble family precisely choose Milna bay to raise a fortress and church. Milna has a long sea tradition and is well known for ship owners and captains, whose sailing ships sailed throughout the Mediterranean and distant oceans. In the mid 19th century shipyards in Milna have yielded 16 sailboats. Widely known Dalmatian ship bracera named after the Italian name for the island of Brac, which reads Brazza, was created in the shipyards of Milna.
The most important historical sites in Milna are the parish church of Our Lady of the Annunciation from year 1783 characterized by a rich interior with various images, sculptures and tombstones. Another particular example of cultural heritage lies in the bay Osibova that carefully preserves the ruins of an old Gothic church. Interesting historical fact relating to Milna is that during the Napoleonic wars in 1820 the Russian fleet had its own naval base in Milna.
Milna is the biggest, most protected and extremely beautiful harbor. It splits into two sleeves Zal and Panthers, two sunken valleys that descend from the interior. Between the two sleeves protrude the broad, blunt promontory with the clearing that around the church and the old castle gathered numerous small houses. Their stone facades are facing the sun, making wonderful ambient, typical of the Dalmatian region.
No settlement manage to preserve in such a degree as Milna a perfect harmony between civil, fishing houses on the shore and the rural architecture of the hill, adorned with snake shaped roads winding in the olive groves.
