Komiža is situated in a deep bay at the south - western side of the island of Vis. Oriented to sea, for centuries has a long tradition of fishery. It is a little picturesque Mediterranean town, with narrow streets, attractive stone houses squeezed together along the harbor and numerous beaches and mild climate.
Komiža will delight you with its charm, rich cultural heritage and its excellent food and wines. You have to taste 'Komišku pogaču' (pie with salted anchovies), lobsters and 'hib' (cake made from dry figs, almonds and brandy). Also, you have to taste wonderful local wines and as a special delicates you have to taste carobs that grow free on the island.
Along the entire eastern coast of Komiža bay there are many pebble beaches with springs of fresh, flowing water that will refresh you on hot summer days. They are: Gusarica, Nova Pošta, and Velo Žalo.
In Komiža you have to visit St. Nicholas’ Convent, monastery from the 13th century, known as Muster. Kastel (Venetian tower) in the harbor from the 16th century is home of the Fishermen’s Museum. You will be charmed with the church of Our Lady of Gusarica, The fortified church of St. Roch (Rocco), and the church of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows (the New Church).
