Welcome to Hvar!

Hvar is an island in the Adriatic Sea, which belongs to the middle-Dalmatian islands. It is situated in Split-Dalmatia County, in the middle of a group of islands that are part of the county. North of the island of Hvar there is the island of Brac, and south of it there are Scedro (separated from it by Scedro channel), Vis, Pakleni islets, Korcula and Peljesac peninsula.

Hvar is the longest and the sunniest Croatian island and one of the most beautiful islands in the world. It is a part of the central Dalmatian archipelago with the area of 299.6 sq km (length 68.2 km, width up to 10.5 km) and population of 11,459 inhabitants. Hvar Island is administratively part of the Split-Dalmatia County in Dalmatia, Croatia. The major places (all on the coast of the island) are: the town of Hvar, Stari Grad, Jelsa, Sucuraj and Vrboska. Other places on the coast are: Milna, Sveta Nedilja, Ivan Dolac and Zavala. Places which aren’t on the coast are: Brusje, Grablje, Selca near Starog Grada, Dol, Rudina, Vrbanj, Svirce, Vrisnik, Pitve, Humac, Poljica, Zastrazisce, Gdinj, Bogomolje and Selca near Bogomolja.

Every stone on the island of Hvar evidences rich cultural and historical legacy of this amazing island. The most important sights on the island are: fortress Fortica (16th) century, the Cathedral of St. Stephen in Hvar that was built on the foundations of an early Christian church ( 6th) century, Franciscan monastery in Hvar ( 15th) century, the City Hall with a clock (15th) century, Hektorovic Palace in Hvar, the ruins of the ancient city of Pharos in the Old City, Church of St. Anthony in Sucuraj (17th century), Sućuraj lighthouse at the eastern part of the island ( 19th) century, the fortress (fortica) in Sucuraj, Franciscan (formerly Augustinian) monastery, the church – fortress in Vrboska ( 16th) century, bridge in Vrboska, Church of St. John in Jelsa ( 15th) century and “Arsenal” (13th) century, above which is the oldest public theater in the world(17th) century.

Nearby the town of Hvar there are many interesting excursion sites such as: Pakleni islets, Red rocks, caves of Sveta Nedilja, Grapceva cave. The Pakleni islets are pearls on the crown of the island Hvar, and they hide many small hidden bays and sunny beaches. The bays and beaches together with vineyards and olive groves will offer you authentic atmosphere of Mediterranean. The most popular beaches on the island are Mekicevica, Milna, Zaraca, Dubovica, Sveta Nedilja and Jagodna beach.
