Municipality Podstrana belongs to the Split-Dalmatia County. It is located southeast from the city of Split, about 7 km away from the historical city center and at the foot of the mountain massif Mosor. The municipality covers an area of 11.5 km2, while its coastal area covers 6 km of indented bays and sandy beaches.
Municipality of Podstrana consists of five villages that are Perun, Strozanac, Grljevac, St. Martin and Mutogras that are interconnected in a continuous stretched urban belt by the Adriatic road.
Podstrana was from the earliest times an attractive place to live. Its first known inhabitants were the Illyrians, members of the Dalmate tribes. At the end of first century BC the Romans founded a settlement in this picturesque area called Pituntium. With arrive of Croats to these territories new settlements started to sprout out. The oldest among these settlements is Gornja Vas, established near water sources Mura.
Cradle of today’s Podstrana is old Podstrana, a strain of longitudinal centuries-old stone houses located at the foot of steep cliffs Vrsine, whose courtyards and streets are still keeping alive the spirit of the past. The life poured out from here into the area of the coastal belt territory, today occupied with numerous urbanized settlements.
Some of the monuments that you must not forget to visit during your stay in Podstrana are: Old Village, Ruzic palace, house Cindro, church of St. Jure with cemetery, church of St. Jure Perun, a marble statue of the Virgin, a statue of St. Anthony of Padua from the 18th century, church of St. Ante and Rocco, the old parish church in Podstrana, church of St.Fabian and the remnants of ancient villa.
